About Kodo

This Japanese professional taiko drumming troupe is based on Sado Island, where members undergo a rigorous, isolated training regime. The ensemble grew out of the Ondekoza group, debuting under their current name at a festival in Berlin. On stage, performers play massive drums, some weighing several hundred kilograms, alongside bamboo flutes, koto, and traditional dance. Audiences looking to compare kodo tickets can expect an intense physical performance where the deep, resonant vibrations of the instruments can be felt throughout the entire auditorium.

The name of the group carries a dual meaning in Japanese, translating both as heartbeat and children of the drum. This reflects the primal nature of the rhythm, which mimics the sound of a mother's pulse heard from inside the womb. The show moves from delicate, intricate percussion to thunderous, synchronized climaxes that demand extreme athletic endurance from the drummers. Finding kodo tickets allows spectators to experience this ancient musical tradition reimagined for modern global stages.
