About Musicals
Stage musicals combine spoken dialogue, acting, set design, and choreography with a continuous musical score to tell a narrative. Characters break into song to express heightened emotion, internal conflict, or pivotal plot developments, often supported by a live orchestra or ensemble band in the pit. Production styles range from large-scale productions with elaborate moving sets, flying rigs, and full dance choruses to intimate chamber pieces featuring minimal staging and small instrumentals. Audiences buying musicals tickets can expect a structured performance usually split into two acts by an intermission.
Venues vary from historic ornate auditoriums with tiered balconies to modern black box spaces, each creating a distinct relationship between the performers and the audience. Some productions are fully sung-through with no spoken dialogue, relying entirely on vocal melodies to drive the plot, while others follow a traditional book format with distinct scenes between musical numbers. When looking to compare musicals tickets, considering whether a production is a classic revival, a jukebox show featuring existing pop songs, or a brand-new contemporary score helps match the performance to personal taste.
