About Our Town
Thornton Wilder wrote this landmark American drama as a deliberate reaction against the elaborate, realistic stage sets of his era. The play depicts the daily lives of the citizens of Grover's Corners, a fictional New Hampshire town, through the eyes of the Stage Manager, who acts as narrator and guide. Audiences searching for our town tickets will find a production traditionally performed with minimal scenery, no props, and actors miming their daily routines to emphasize the universal nature of human existence.
The story focuses on the relationship between George Gibbs and Emily Webb as they grow from childhood neighbors into adulthood. This simple narrative earned Wilder a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Theatergoers who compare our town tickets can expect a powerful exploration of life, love, and mortality that relies entirely on the strength of the ensemble cast. The final act, set in the local cemetery, delivers a quiet meditation on how much of daily life goes unappreciated by the living.
