Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts

This unique Virginia venue stands as the only national park dedicated entirely to the performing arts. Its centerpiece, the Filene Center, is an open-air pavilion constructed from natural Douglas fir and southern yellow pine, designed to blend into the surrounding woodland. The structure creates a warm acoustic environment where sound carries clearly from the stage into the open forest air. Audiences can choose between sheltered spots directly under the wooden roof or expansive lawn spaces under the stars.

The experience of attending a performance here combines nature with world-class acoustics. Patrons often arrive early to picnic on the grassy hillsides before the music begins. The open sides of the pavilion allow breeze and twilight to mix with the performances, creating an informal yet focused atmosphere.
